She goes in with no complaints every morning, gets zapped and then goes on with her daily crossword puzzles and reading of a book that my wife lends her. Today, as I waited for her, I thought about all that she has had to endure and continues to go through. Surgeries, doctor visits, chemo, radiation, being tired, the leaky roof, the leaky basement, drivers side window won't go up or down in her car, mold in the basement, pay the bills, computer problems, death of her mom and dad, death of her brother, death of her husband, death of her aunt, death of her close friend Jan Meadow, the list goes on. I guess its just like anyone elses list on what happens in life. Anytime I ask her about how she's doin' she says "life aim't for sissy's, life ain't for sissy's son".
, Later on this afternoon, I got out to the farm to knock out a few of my chores. As I walked through the garden I found that deer had eaten all of my organic strawberry plants, corn on the eastside of the field had been mowed down, most of my sunflowers had been eaten by geese, Potato beetles were on a few tomato plants, and one tractor was broke down with a bad fuel pump. All meaningless as compared to what my mom has to go through. Just a day in the life for any old farmer, and yet, I would be lieing to you if didn't confess that I cussed, kicked the dirt, threw my hat, looked up into the sky and asked "why"?

I got no answer.

I doubt that answer will ever make it to my ear.

Tonight on the way home in my truck, I thought about my mom.

"life ain't for sissy's,
life ain't for sissy's son".
I really can't think of anything closer to the truth.

Ben

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone

Location:Farm

Old friend lends a hand

A few of my old friends have been hangin around me these days and it's not because I owe them any money. We have been very busy out here on the farm. Recently(by hand) I hoed 5, four hundred foot rows of corn and placed a little organic lime around each corn stalk. Rick Holcome and Tim Bryan (thanks fellas) placed a new fence in the field for the cucumbers and the plants are already up and going. Also put straw down around the strawberries in hopes of our second round of fruit. Our heirloom tomatoes are looking good and should be ready to harvest in 2 weeks. I don't think I had a chance to thank my wife and kids for helping plant the herb garden. Thanks. All organic mint, oregano, thyme, basil, parsley, will be hand picked to sell as well. Last week I moved our sprinkler system around the field to give the crops a little extra water. Our water comes from a 300ft well and the tested almost pure. No clorine, No floride. Just great drinking water. I'll post the testing results as soon as I can scan them in . I also have a copy of the water report for you to read on site. I wanted to let you know that we will be open in 2 weeks but please call before you come out to make sure our produce is ready.
Thanks and we look forward to meeting you,
Ben

Produce that will be available this year

Heres a list of produce that we will offer for 2010. This fall we will be plowing in and planting our berry patch which will consist of blueberries, blackberries, strawberries and raspberries.

Our asparagus field is also under construction and we look forward to a bountiful harvest within two seasons. You may wonder why we must wait two years to harvest the asparagus. The reason is that asparagus procrastinates (which means it fits in well with most of us); it is a perennial plant and it takes 2 seasons for it to become acclimated to the soil.

We will also be planting garlic cloves of 2 hardneck varieties; one is a "Persian Star" and the other is a "Spanish Roja". We will also plant several silver skin or softneck varieties. We do this in the fall not only to keep away the Halloween vampires, but also because planting garlic in the fall should yield a beautiful and aromatic crop by early summer.

Fortunately, our closest neighbors are the folks at the Buford Trout Hatchery which is a state run Department of Natural Resources trout farm. The trout at this farm are fed only organic feed. When the fish tanks are cleaned, the fish manure is laid out in rows and dried in the sun. Farmer Ben drives his tractor next door, removes the fish compost, and places it in our compost pile where it decomposes along with other organic-only matter. The by-product is among the most mineral-rich organic fertilizers available. This is a modern version of the process that Native Americans used to ferilize their crops which was to bury fish in their fields.

Keep checking the blog for pictures and updates of our progress during this exciting time on the farm!
